engine Oil Leak

I have a 1998 Altima and just replaced the front crank seal. Oil was spraying all over from belts. Thought it was a done deal but still leaking. I am taking off the crank pulley again tommorrow just to see if it is still the seal. I cant tell if its coming from above the seal so removing the pulley should help. The seal replacement was very easy. Used the OEM part. Any advice from others would be helpful.

You have to make sure the shaft is not damage and that you tight the pulley at factory specs. 105-112 ft-lb.

front crank seal

Thanks for your quick reply. The seal rotates againt the crank pulley which I inspected and cleaned - looked OK. I may have inserted the seal a little to deep in the housing so may try again - will make an insertion tool to ensure the seal does not go below the housing surface. How do you hold the motor from rotatiing when torqueing. The car is automatic. I ended up removing the bolt with an air impact gun so figured tightening would be adequate.

You can either remove the starter and hold the flex plate or you can also use a chain wrenche to hold the crank pulley. I used the chain wrench.

not the crank seal

Hello Tech

I pulled the crank pulley today and its not leaking. Oil seems to be coming from below alternator around the water pump side of the motor. Almost looked like oil was coming out of the weep hole in the water pump but I dont think that is possible. I opened the oil fill cap in the valve cover when the car was running and seems to have alot of pressure - too much pressure. I need to find the PCV.

1998 Altima PCV

I found it with a little help from the dealers parts dept - worth the $10. It is under the intake on the passenger side just above the Power Steering Pump. Was difficult to replace but not more than an hour - definitely not your fathers Buick. There is a bracket which supports the the intake back to the block which once removed provided enough access. I removed the PCV from the motor grommet by prying with a long screwdriver 12in. Once removed from the motor it was easier to get at the clamp by flexing the rubber hose. The long screwdrive is key.
