2000 sentra idle problems?

hello, my step-son's 2000 nissan sentra w/1.8 engine idles a little rough at 750rpm then real rough at 1000-1500rpm and then it smooths right out. he said auto zone got 2 codes with the code reader 303 and 1493. does anyone know what these could be and does anyone have a repair manual for this car,or know where he can get one, it seems for some reason a hard one to find? thanks alot Randy

Welcome to Nissanhelp.com forums!!

There are a few bulletins that deal with rough idle. You can look the list of bulletins here:

http://www.nissanhelp.com/Ownership/Sentra/EngineP.htm

The P1493 code is for the purge control solenoid valve. If the solenoid valve is not working properly and stays open when is not needed, it will trigger the P0303 code.

location of part ?

hello where is this valve and is there a way of troubleshooting it? i'm good at working on cars when i have service and repair manuals for them. it seems my stepson and i can't find a haynes or chilton's for this car . any ideas or help? thanks Randy

Here are some figures that ma help you located the valve and tested.

thanks

awesome reply. thanks that's exactly what i needed .your help is greatly appreciated.

what exactly does this valve do because he said his mileage now is going right down the tubes, and is terrible.

what does it mean air passage continuity between A& B on that test where you put 12v DC onto the solenoid? thanks and do you know roughly how much for this part?

dragin 08-01-2006 08:26 PM

When there is 12 volts applied , you should have air flow between A & B, in other words you should be able to blow air into A and have it come out B when voltage is applied to the solenoid. There should be no air through it when there is no voltage.

thanks very much for the reply, dragin :-)

well we checked the solenoid valve the way i was shown here in this forum by nissan tech. it seems to be fine. when we put voltage acrosss the terminals ,air was able to flow through A & B. no voltage then no air flow, this is good. we also got 27 ohms across the terminals of the valve, i don't know what it should be though? any other ideas ? thanks still get codes 303 and1493.

Lets the leave the solenoid alone for one moment and concentrate in the other code.

You also got a P0303 code which is for a the number 3 cylinder misfire.

Have you look at that problem yet?

OK if you haven't these are the possible causes of that code:

-Improper spark plug
-Insufficient compression
-Incorrect fuel pressure
-EGR volume control valve
-The injector circuit is open or shorted
-Injectors
-Intake air leak
-The ignition secondary circuit is open or shorted
-Lack of fuel
-Drive plate/Flywheel
-Heated oxygen sensor 1 (front)

Make sure the spark plug is in good condition and if is possible swap it with another cylinder's plug.

Also may want to make sure the valve cover gasket is not leaking around the spark plug holes.

Has the car ever overheated?

randypape 08-06-2006 05:51 AM

my step-son and his dad put a new part that goes onto the #3 plug because of the 303 code and it didn't change anything for thr $95.00 they spent :-(
is the firing order from left to right on this 4 cyl. 1,2,3,4,? i checked all 4 plugs and the pieces that go on them and got 16-17M ohm's on them so they seem fine. i'm thinking of buying a scan tool to help analyze this car and future ones. do you have any recommendations?
it would really help if i could find a repair manual for this car.
thanks again Randy

We'll check the gasket like you said but i don't think it overheated i'll have to ask him. thanks

i have had a few sentras with blown head gaskets on no. 3 and 4 cylinders. you can remove the spark plugs apply pressure to the cooling system with pressure tester attached to the radiator and shine a light into the cylinders to see if there is any coolant getting in the cylinders.

dragin 08-08-2006 08:16 AM

I say check head gasket. usually #3or4 cyl. will get coolant entering and cause misfire code till it burns off. Dave
