Power Steering system bleeding?
Car: 1995 Nissan Maxima
Is there a special procedure how to bleed the power steering system when replacing the return hose? It's been leaking at the same spot (replaced twice but keeps on leaking). It is at the connection or junction of the return aluminum tube (from steering assembly) and the rubber hose towards the cooler tube assembly. I used newer hose but reused the wire clamps. The hose turns 90 degrees towards the cooler tube and there's no leak in that junction. There's no visible crack to the aluminum tube. The new hose has approximately the same length as the original (to make a nice radial bend :wink2: ). I tried a different clamp (flat steel screw tightened) but to no avail. The leak starts when the bubbles in the reservoir clear & cooler tube warms. Please help. TIA. |
No, there is no special way to bleed the system. If there is still air in the system, the air will bleed out by it self during the first few minutes of driving. If system usually bubbles at the reservoir when the is low in fluid or when air is entering the system.
What I usually do when replacing the hoses is draining all the fluid from the system, clean the tubes and then add some silicone around the end of the tube. Sometimes I don't even have to replaced the hose, just clean tube add silicone and replaced clamp and all works well. |
thanks, nissan tech. i wonder about the silicone, do you use it to lubricate for easier re-insertion of the tube to the hose or does it help in sealing?

leak fixed. solution: high temperature, power steering return hose rated (hose in/outside diameters same as original). re-used the old wire clamps (has pre-set maximum tightness=can not be overtightened).:emoticon:
