ECU Symptoms?

Anyone have an ECU or ECM unit replaced (located on passenger side)? Could you tell me what are the car symtoms if it had a bad ECU unit?

My 96 GLE altima had various electrical problems, including none working radio, AC, headlight and on and off speedometer prior. Currently my car won't start. A day prior the car would just stop without any warning sound or anything. Just as if the engine had simply stopped or shut down. I had driven only a few blocks when this happen. The car started up again after stopping but I had only driven it back to park it. I let it ran for an hour idle after I parked it. The next day it won't start. The car crank, but won't start. I step on the gas after jump starting and could hear just a slight engine rumble as if it was trying to start. This happen after leaving the car for a few weeks during a winter storm. Could this be the ECU unit problem? I've change the distributor, alternator, and battery just a year ago and I've tried to jump start the car without success. Any input. Thanks.

Is the engine light ON? you should start by checking for codes, if there are no codes stored in the ECU check is there is spark and for fuel pressure while cranking the engine.

The front headlight is on and fairly bright, however it may have a bad connection because I have to kick the light sometime for it to start.

How do I check the fuel pressure on my 96 altima and which part would I have to replace if there is no or low pressure? Could the ECU be the culprit as well for the car to stall and not starting? Thanks.

No the headlight, the Check Engine Light?

A simple way to check if there is fuel pressure on your 96 Altima, is by disconnecting the fuel hose from the fuel filter. Turn the key ON and have someone check if fuel comes out. The fuel pump will only work for a few second is the engine doesn't start. If no fuel comes out, the fuel pump is not working. Either there is no power to the fuel pump or you have a faulty pump.

First, have the ECM scan for trouble codes. This really takes the guesswork out. Find a freelance mechanic who will do it for $25.

From all that I have read, while the ECM may go bad, though rarely the case. Does your '96 have a anti theft system? Are you using the original transponder key.

My no start was due to control unit immobilizer malfunction ( in nissan world lingo). Its located by the ignition key cylinder. It receives signal from transponder key and sends to ECM. Does your security light stay on while cranking your engine. If so, this is the culprit and computer put car in lockdown mode. You can replace it yourself but you have to take car to dealer to program the new part and all your keys.

In addition to what Nissan Tech said, check the fuses ( fuel pump, lights, radio, etc.) Check for bad crankshaft position sensor or MAF sensor. All the above and more you will know if you scan the ECM.

I just receive a used ECM/ECU unit and hope to replace it. Will update when part is installed. I try to test if the fuel pump is working as well by disconnecting fuel hose from the fuel filter suggested by NissanTech. Do I need to focus on the Fuel Pump Fuse? Also how much and how difficult to replace the fuel pump on a 96 Altima? Thanks.

ECM/ECU replaced, now with engine light on

I've replaced the ECM/ECU unit with a used one on ebay. The model car and year is the same but not the exact model number on the ECM/ECU unit. After I replace it the engine lights come on. I've had to go to a mechanic to do a diagnostic. When he put on the diagnostic machine the engine light goes away, however the light comes back on after turning of the engine. I was told to drive around 40 miles to reset it, but after driven for over 100 miles, it still has not worked on resetting the ECM unit it seems, and the engine light is now back. Any suggestion on how to get my engine light to go away to pass my State inspection? Much appreciated.
