P1140 and Intake valve timing control position sensor

My 2002 Sentra has just under 100,000 kms on it, and a few days ago, the "service engine soon" warning popped up. I took it to a shop, and the error code was P1140.

After consulting the factory manual, it appears that the "Intake valve timing control position sensor" or "Intake valve timing control position solenoid" needs to be replaced. Is the aforementioned part reffered to by some other name, as i can't seem to find a part number for it? Most likely, i will not be getting the original Nissan part.

Also, any advice regarding the replacement would be appreciated. I have driving the car around a little bit in the meantime, and i haven't noticed any other problems.

Between, the mechanic at the shop wanted to replace the O2 sensors.

The replacement of the intake valve timing control position sensor seems pretty straightforward, but it won't be easy reaching the screw the that holds it in place, as evident from the photos. Rotating the screw with the pliers appears to be the only option.

It still haven't found the part yet, though. I called a couple of used Nissan parts dealers here in Canada, but no luck so far.

The factory manual also mentions that, "Check accumulation of debris to the signal pick-up portion of the camshaft." Can anyone please explain this to me?

It appears that "intake valve timing control position sensor" is also called the camshaft position sensor, acccordint to the following link:

Can anyone confirm this, please?

Another twist:

Is "intake valve timing control position sensor," the "camshaft position sensor," and the "crankshaft position sensor" referring to the same thing?

On the following link, a guy is describing how to replace the "crankshaft position sensor," and it looks the same as the "intake valve timing control position sensor."

I haven't heard it called the "intake valve timing control position sensor" before, but the camshaft and crankshaft position sensors are both the same part, but are 2 different sensors. The camshaft sensor is located on top of the motor and the crankshaft sensor is located underneath on the backside. Same part number for both sensors. From my experience and what I have read elsewhere it is a good idea to use the OEM parts rather than the aftermarket versions. They're about $40 per piece.

Thank you for the response, mike_s. It's appreciated. I will update the thread, so that it can be used by others in the future for reference.

Between, what's your source for Nissan parts?

Thank you

I purchased both sensors from a local Nissan dealership here in MN (Wayzata Nissan). I paid $40.00 each for them. I wasn't overly impressed by the parts manager who tried to charge me $70.00 a piece when I went to pick them up, but he corrected it when I told him I been quoted $40.00 over the phone earlier in the day.

I installed them both in my garage and detailed the install on a previous post.

I also just took a look at the sensor you referenced on Ebay. I would not recommend using that one as it is the same as the ones that fail on a regular basis. Nissan had a recall for the sensors (in spite of my VIN number being in the middle of the numbers recalled and experiencing the exact failures described in the recall, I was assured by a lady at Nissan USA that my sensor was not part of the recall. I was not impressed with their service to say the least). The redesigned OEM sensors are metal rather than plastic and hold up to high temps better than the original plastic ones that fail and were the reason for the recall.

mike_s, here in Canada, we really get gouged on pretty much everything, and car parts are no exception. I am going to call Nissan Canada in the morning and have a word with them. I don't expect anything, but hey, you never know.

I will also call the dealer to find out how much he wants for the parts. I think it would be around $80-$100.

On another note, i bought the following OBD scanner a few days ago. Today it arrived, and it won't work on the Sentra. Despite the setback, i am determined not to take the car to any repair shop.

Called a local Nissan dealer today, and he quoted me a price of $48 for the sensor, which was a pleasant surprise to me. I will pick it up sometime over the next couple of days.

Mike_s, the problem has almost been solved. The 2002 Sentra has three sensors: crankshaft, camshaft, and variable timing control. The 2003 model does not have the variable timing control sensor.

More info can be found in this Nissan recall: http://maxima.theowensfamily.com/tsb/NTB03-124.pdf

I ordered the 23731-4M528 kit, which includes all of the three aforementioned sensors, from here: NISSAN SENTRA CAM AND CRANK SENSOR KIT 1.8 MOTOR: eBay Motors (item 250677662385 end time Oct-03-10 11:49:35 PDT)

The sensors should be here in Canada in 10-15 days, and i should finally beable to get rid of the "service engine light" soon.

I am going to keep the crankshaft and camshaft sensors for potential future use. I hope someone else can find this info useful.

sentra368 10-08-2010 02:03 PM

The parts haven't arrived yet, but two days ago, i cleared the code, and "
Service Engine Soon" light hasn't come back on. I have driven the car around for 20-25 kms in the two days.

Anything i can deduce from this development?

mike_s 10-09-2010 04:36 AM

same thing with mine. I would clear and be ok for a while, but then light and symptoms would return. it got progessively worse until i replaced the sensors. never had a problem since.

sentra368 10-09-2010 07:04 PM

mike_s, thanks for the reply. My car hasn't shown any problems, but i will keep the driving to a minimum till i fix it.
