how to replace ecm myself (reprogram keys?)

2004 nissan spectra spec-v se-r manual
our car wouldn't start when we tried to turn it on after putting gas in it. we replaced the battery which was dead but still won't start. the friendly mechanics said it was the ecm.
i've read all i can find about ecm but need step by step instruction. local auto parts will sell us new one for $400 and i know we have to disconnect battery before connecting new ecm or it will fry the new one. i've heard something about reprogramming keys. when can i reconnect battery in this process and can i try my key as-is before towing the car to nissan to have keys reprogrammed.

You can purchase a "Chiltons repair mannual" for around $25 at Orileys. this is a pretty detailed book it may have what you are searching for. I had bought one to fix my sister-n-laws VW i will look and see if it mentions the ecm and comment my findings on your thread.

Everything I have ever seen about nissan, ECM replacing and reprogramming keys has had to be done at the dealer. I very well could be wrong. however, I do not believe there are any on-board methods for reprogramming keys...

Something you could look at would be having the ECM repaired instead of replaced. I believe then there would be no need to reprogram keys, because you would be getting your ECM back. It is just an option and is usually cheaper than replacing an ECM. I am not completely sure about having to reprogram the keys with the repair..that is something you could ask the repair technician. If you google ECM repair I am sure you will come up with a few links.

Maybe someone here knows of a reputable ECM repair site/store?
