How to set timing 2003 3.3L

I know how to set timing w/ light but need to know how to set computer to diogostics mode as called for in the Haynes Repair manual. If I connect the OBD scanner, does this place it in the diognostic mode? Please advise. I'm simple so all the proper steps required would be helpful.

Thanks

You don't need the OBD scanner to set the time.

1. Run engine at about 2,000 rpm for about 2 minutes under no-load.

2. Rev engine (2,000 to 3,000 rpm) two or three times under noload, when run engine at idle speed.

3. Turn off engine and disconnect throttle position sensor harness connector.

4. Start and rev engine (2,000 to 3,000 rpm) two or three times under no-load, then run at idle speed.

5. Check ignition timing with a timing light.

M/T : 10°±2° BTDC
A/T : 10°±2° BTDC (in “P” or “N” position)

Thanks for the help. I didn't do it this way so I'll check it tomorrow. Hope this is why gas mpg is poor.
