98 Pathfinder Code 1444

I got a code 1444 (Purge Volume Control Valve) with my 98 Pathfiner. I did notice a very strong smell of fuel vapors one day when I parked. I got quotes for the valve ranging from $250 to $150. Before I spend this amount on the valve, could this be a evap canister problem due to the strong smell or could something else to this error code?

Any good on-line sellers of Nissan parts? The purge volume control valve is a dealer item, and the prices are outrageous for such a small simple part.

Well, I figured out that it was the charcaol canister that failed and sent charcoal down the evap lines. I cleaned the lines and replaced the canister and it looks to be OK.

What typically causes the canister to fail? Should I be conccerned about anything else?
