2006 Timing chain replacement
2006 Pathfinder SE
Going to do one soon. Have some questions for those who have done it themselves. 1) Are any of the gears plastic???? 2) Any gaskets???? Is it only silicone???? 3) Any seals/o-rings/gaskets behind the back timing cover that might leak???? 4)How long did it take???? |

Gears are all metal. Rtv for the cover. There are 2 seals for the small covers over the cam gears and 2 o-rings on the timing cover. If you order the parts off the bulletin you will get what you need. I would suggest also replacing the guide on the tensioner side of the main timing chain. They have been known to break. (Nylon breaks and slides off of metal backing). I do them in about 4 hours but I have done several. You should be able to finish it in a day without any problems.

Thanks. Friends car.
He ordered a kit off ebay. Looks like it comes with three chains, three tensioners, two guides, three seals and water pump. Didn't see any o-rings. |

If you don't have the ring gear stopper, you'll need to remove the upper plenum and valve covers so you can put a wrench on the cams to torque the bolts. If you have the stopper, it holds the crank and the timing chains hold the gears in place while you torque the cam gear bolts. It also makes it a lot easier to loosen and torque the crank pulley bolt if you don't have access to air tools. For me, the worst part of the job is cleaning off the old RTV!

Finally finished it after two days.
Probably never do another one again. Worse part for me was finding all the o-rings. And cleaning off the old silicone. All the paint on the factory chains must have fallen off. No mnarks on any of the chains. I did remove the valve covers to change the gaskets, so holding the cams was not a problem. Hardest part was reinstallong the P/S pump and alt. 12mm top bolt on the P/S just didn't want to line up. Had to loosen the bracket bolts, snug the top bolt, then tighten the bracket bolts. Found that out after the Alt was already in. Both cam shoes were worn metal to metal. Everything else was fine. Water pump replaced while I was in there. Wouldn't want to do it without removing the cover. |

How the heck did you get the cover back on. I'm trying to get the cover on but the lower seal keeps twisting out. When I get the bottom in the top doesn't want to go on. I assume it must go straight, both top and bottom at the same time, but when I do the seal gets in the way. What am I doing wrong?

Did you tap the alignment dowels back into the front cover so they don't prevent you from installing the cover? After the cover is in place and a few bolts installed, you can tap the dowels into the block from the front of the cover.
