Default Gear Shift Lever

This is a 09 Pathy SE

When I push the brake to go, I can't get the shift lever to let me put in it in gear. The shift lock solenoid doesn't release the lever, If I push and release the brake pedal a few times I can hear the solenoid "Click" and the lever allows me to shift into a gear. Is the switch for the solenoid part of the brake switch?

Thanks

There is a shift lock actuator on the left side of the shifter that locks and unlocks the shifter. On the inner/left side of the shifter is a micro-switch with a small metal lever which the shift lever depresses when the shift lever is moved into the PARK position. It gets it's signal from the brake switch. So, there could be a couple of things that can do this. First, check your brake lights and make sure they work with the pedal, which would check the brake switch operation. If that's okay, you could have a faulty actuator; sometimes they can stick if a beverage is spilled on the console and leaks through to the switch, which you have to remove the center console to access. On my '08 Pathy, I had a similar issue. At first, it was intermittent but then it started to occur all of the time. I pulled the console and make sure I was getting a signal from the brake switch. I assumed it was the actuator but was wrong. As I looked further into it, I saw (with the actuator removed) the tiny micro-switch on the inside of the shifter assembly. This micro-switch is not sold separately and is considered part of the shifter assembly. So, I carefully bent the metal lever on it so they shifter would engage it sooner, put everything together and it worked!

You have to remove the back cup holder to access 2 bolts. Remove the trim around the front cup holders and shifter to access the screws and there may be one at each side of the console at the very front. Then the console pulls out; unplug the power sockets as you pull up on the console.

I'm not sure if it's the same on the 2009, but on my 2008, there is a round. plastic cab on the finisher just in front of the shifter. If you remove the cap, you can use a screwdriver inserted on the hole to disengage the shift lock and allow you to get the shift out of gear.
