Could be the canister, but you should check the fuel tank hoses as well. Unfortunately I haven't had any problem with gas smell on the Pathfinder and there are no service bulletin for that problem either, but there is an old recall for the fuel filler. Thanks Nissan Tech,
I did have the fuel filler tube changed a 2 maybe 3 years ago by the dealer. I didn't small gas after they installed it, but I'll check the hoses and connections this weekend. Quote:

I have a steady gas leak after filling the tank - lasting until I drive the vehicle so it consumes at least a gallon or so - then there is a faint smell still, but no noticeable leak dripping.
The location is driver-side, right in front of the rear wheel, which is exactly where the fill tube connects to the tank. Will Nissan still honor this recal regardless of the age of the vehicle? If not, what would be the approximate cost to repair? NTB07-078 VOLUNTARY RECALL CAMPAIGN ![]() 1997–2001 NISSAN PATHFINDER; VOLUNTARY RECALL CAMPAIGN FUEL FILLER TUBE |
