Default P1440-small leak P0455 - gross leak

2001 Pathfinder Evap system Vacuum cut valve bypass valve problem?

Check Engine Light on?

Codes P1440 (Evap Very Small Leak) , P0455 (Evap Gross Leak)

You might have a bad Evap system Vacuum cut valve bypass valve. Mine was totally rusted and fell apart in my hand.

This electronic valve sits together on a little shelf in front of the spare tire on top of the brake load sensing valve together with the plastic Evap system vacuum cut valve. The metal part of the vacuum cut valve bypass valve was collecting road salt and rusting away.

Mine started with a Code P1440 (very small leak) and progressed to a P0455 (gross leak) so I decided to figure it out. I removed the evap canister and related components for testing. (Note: the small bolts will likey be badly rusted and need to be replaced and will likely break off when removing them!)

If you don’t mind poking around and getting dirt in your face you might be able to find the problem. The part number for mine was 14933-0Z80A. It cost about $100 so I may try to “re-manufacture” mine for a spare when I get some time.

Note: Best to wear protective glasses to keep dirt/rust out of your eyes when working under the car.

Note: Components circled in blue are in the engine compartment. Components circled in red are under the rear of the car. The evap canister and and vent control valve are in the left rear just behind the tire (the vent control valve may also be badly rusted).

I think a combination of dirt country road driving and winter road salt here in New England.....undercarriage really takes a beating! PS. Also did some bypass surgery on a couple of rusted brake lines. 99% of the line is fine - heavy vinyl coating - but the last few inches is bare because they have to do the flaring tool thing.

trace hoses to valve. Remove spare tire to make room. I had removed canister for testing the other components but it sits on a little shelf in front of spare tire. I think there was just on nut holding it.....

Now that I replaced the Vacuum cut bypass valve I got a fuel leak somewhere on top of the fuel tank. It only leak's when engine is running and a litle after I shut the engine off. I'm not sure if it's still something wrong in the EVAP system. I am not getting any codes.

Please somebody help me!!!!!!!

Ok I'm back. In 09 I had a 1441 code pop up. I changed the vaule but the problem was actually my charcoal canister(http://www.aa1car.com/library/evap_n...ntb00-085a.pdf). Go to this link it's very good. Now I have a 1440 code. Now in 09 I changed the bypass value and the cut bypass value ( becareful bc the dealership with give u the wrong part) what r the odds of it popping up again after I just changes that part.

Great information guys. I have a P0455 Large Leak code. I ordered the Valve and I will go down to the Dealer tommorow to purchase the OEM Gas cap. i bought a locking Stant Cap but I am not sure it is getting a good seal. If someone steals my fuel that is like 70 bucks here in Hawaii. Ouch! I will kep you updated.

I see a lot more P0455 codes from faulty canister vent control valves than I do from bad vacuum cut valve bypass valves. I would at least do a componant check on the vent control valve before throwing $100 down on a "guess" that the VCVBV is faulty do to another's experience! Sure, it "may" be the VCVBV, but any large leak in the evaporative emissions system can and will cause a P0455 DTC.
