Default 2002 ECU Location?

Long story short....dealer recommended replacing my 2002 SE ECU at a cost of $1300! I found a couple of places online that will R&R my existing ECU but I need to pull it from my Pathy. The problem is, I don't know where it is located nor what I need to do to get to it if its behind the dash! Any suggestions (besides taking it to the dealer!)?

The Engine Control Module (ECM) is on the right side of the steering column. You need to remove the cover under the steering column to access the ECM.

I'm sorry, but that doesn't sound right. Your third image looks to be the location consistent with what I've gleaned from the internet....center dash. Also, the ECU in the image looks similar to the unit I would expect (#23710-6W100). I don't think there is enough room on the side of the steering column to house this unit!

It looks right for the ECM but I'm looking for the computer itself.

ECU and ECM is the same. The ECM is the vehicles main computer. There are other computer or modules in your vehicle, the Body Control Module (BCM), Transmission Control Module (TCM), Engine Control Module (ECM) and many more.

Default Pathfinder Service engine light

My service engine soon light keeps coming on in my 02 pathfinder. I replaced the 02 sensors on the bank 1 side and now its giving me a P0420 code which is the pre-cat. I am thinking that maybe I need my computer re-flashed from the dealer, I heard they had a re-call for my model year. When I called the dealer they said my vin # was not one affected by the free re-flash. (imagine that) I don't know if I should replace the pre-cat or have it re-flashed. Any suggestions?

I'm not too sure I can help you. In fact, I still have the SES light after the following actions:

1) Engine shop replaced the sensors and solenoids but the same codes returned.
2) When I bought the Pathy, the previous owner reported his mechanic recommended replacing the engine because of "oil sludge" causing the sensor to fail...so I put a rebuilt engine in....this didn't correct the issue!
3) Nissan checked all the wiring (all passed) so they recommended a new ECM for $1300...I bought a rebuilt one for $400....no joy.
4) Nissan ordered a new ECM...no joy!
5) Nissan (national) is scratching their head because the code that is present is telling them the cam needs to be adjusted 130 degrees (it only travels around 30 degrees!).
6) We are at a loss as to what to do. I live in NJ and as long as the SES light is on, I will not pass inspection.
7) Oh, and now the ABS light is lit!

Has anyone out there run into a similar problem?

I can gladly report my long saga has come to an end! To make a long story short, the issue was the rebuilt engine had the wrong Cam sprocket in it! My Nissan dealer pulled the cover off and compared it to a known good Pathfinder engine only to discover it was different! They replaced the sprocket with the correct one and we are back in business! Whew!
