2005 pathfinder whining noise
We have a 2005 pathfinder that developed a squeal yesterday in the power steering pump/alternator area. I sprayed wd-40 behind the pulley of the pump, then the alternator to try to isolate where the noise is coming from. My redneck diagnosis is the alternator, the noise went away totally for a few seconds. I called the parts store in town to get a replacement, and they wanted to know if it is 110 amp or 130 amp. I am not sure how to tell, but I am guessing the 130 amp. The pathfinder is loaded, power everything, factory entertainment package, and heated seats. Any thoughts on how to tell the coorect alternator? Thanks in advance for any help!

How is the belt tension? These were known for belt tensioner issues.

I removed the belt and checked all the pulleys for anything wrong. The tensioner appeared to be ok.(or at least I didn't see any obvious problems with it)

I too am having a similar issue. I am about to check out the belts, but how would I check to see if the tensioner is the problem?

The belts are in great condition.
I am thinking that its the tensioner now after reading more. Is there a DIY on replacing the tensioner? |

I just finally rid my 05' of squeling belts and pulleys....quick test to see if its just the belt, is to spray it down with soapy water. If the squel stops, then you have a belt/pulley issue. If the squel is still there, then a bearing issue, most likely the tensioner assembly which is about $50 from Nissan, and fairly simple to swap out.
If its the belt/pulley...simply putting a new belt on will take the squel away for a week or so (trust me here). The problem is the pulleys get "glazed" over slightly, especially the small diameter ones (alternator being the smallest). When the belt is removed, I sprayed all my pulleys with brake cleaner, then used a stiff wire brush and ran it over as much of the pulleys as I could get to. Then spray again with brake cleaner to clean the crap off. When that is done, spend the extra cash and get a "Gatorback" belt...skip the nissan one, or generic parts store ones....for an extra $10, get the gatorback. Installed on cleaned pulleys...my noise finally went away for good. Good luck, took me a month and 2 belts to figure this one out. |

with no disrespect...I replaced the belt twice with brand new belts, and they still squaked....I would bet money your tensioner is fine, and you have a pulley glaze issue. Again, before you buy any parts, just spray the belt with soapy water (will not harm the belt or cause slippage). If the noise goes away...not a tensioner issue, its a belt issue. This will save you the aggravation of replaceing the tensioner only to find out you wasted an hour in the cold...

Remove the belt and start the engine for just a few seconds. No squelling then it the belts/pullies.If you stilling hear the noise and it rises when you rev the engine then it's the timing chain/tentioner.
