The charging system is really very simple on a VG30. There shouldn't be any relays to worry about. If the battery won't take a charge, there's obviously something not working. Have you had the battery itself tested? A bad battery can kill an alternator.

Unhappy same problem on my '95 pathy

My battery went dead last xmas, even though the alternator was only 1.5 yrs old & battery only 1 yr old. Battery wouldn't take a charge from a charger, so I replaced it. Now (august), my battery died while i was in the supermarket for 15 mins. & jumpstart didn't work. Could it be an electrical short that's draining the battery and/or causing the alt to not charge consistently?

Default good alt, good battery

well i have a 1995 nissan pathfinder 4x4 xe, i have a 1yr old red top optima, and i have gotten a two alternators, plus the orginal that was in it. well the problem is both the new and rebuilt alts have been tested thru both napa and autozone, and they tested out good, now when either one is in the truck my mulitmeter says i am running 12 volts with it running. no juice. now the truck is running completely off the battery, and will drop to about 6 volts then the truck doesnt have enough power to stay running so it dies. i have checked the connections and fuses but i am absolutely clueless as to where to go, i have tried everything i can think of, i pulled the output off and checked to see if it is putting a charge and both alts are putting out like 1.5 volts, so i am stuck, the alternators have the regulators built right into them. and they tested out working properly at napa and autozone, so what should i do to solve this pain in the neck

the charge at the battery when running and charging should be around 14V, iirc. i'd check at the alt and see if you're producing the juice. also, make sure your belt is tight on the alt.
