Tranny problem with '90 Pathy
the transmission acting up! I bought it about a month ago and Temp gauge and fuel gauge does not work, as well as the light on the cluster! BUT the major problem right now is that when I put the automatic transmission in D and start driving, it goes up to 4k rpm and then goes to 2nd gear and here we go with acting up it goes to 6k rpm and goes to 3rd and when it passes 5k rpm then it acts as it is in N! it only revs but does not shift at all! Over drive light indicates that OD is off! does it need a rebuild cuz i got no money for that? or it could be something minor? I checked the fluid and it was enough! Mechanics do not know what's wrong they asked me to spend 170 to do trans service (fluid, filter and etc) but i did not! Please help this pathfinder to find his path!

For the temperature and fuel gauge issue, the problem is usually a component behind the cluster, I believe is called "Gauge Amplifier".
For the transmission issue, I first recommend to check for codes store in the transmission control module (TCM) and check the transmission fluid level and condition. The codes can be check with any scanner, some auto parts or shops will do that for free. If the fluid is low and smell like burnt, it may not be a bad idea to service the transmission.
