Unhappy Pickup (1996)

I have a starting problem that has gotten progressively worse over time. I have a 1996 4x4 Pickup with only 28,000 miles. 5 months ago I occasionally had trouble starting it. The key would click, you would hear a relay or maybe the fuel pump but the engine wouldn't turn over and no start. The headlamps are bright and the vehicle could not be jumpstarted in this situation. After waiting for a while, the vehicle could always be started. It has gotten to the point where the no start happens every other time I try to start it. However, if I continue to turn the key back and forth with my foot holding the clutch all the way in, the truck will eventually start. It might take 10-20 attempts but it always starts. Any ideas?

Joe

could be a number of things. Probably fuel related. Is your CEL on?

CEL=Check Engine Light aka MIL=Malfunction Indicator Light

Sounds like you have a problem with starter.

My CEL is not "on". If it is a bad spot on the starter, why would it eventually start while sitting in the exact same spot. Repeated attempts to start the engine give no indication that the starter is being bumped to a different position. There is only dead silence from the engine until after many attempts of turning the key, it then catches.

Check starter relay, connections at starter, Sounds like you may have a bad ign.switch.
