Question Looking for a DIY guide for rear hub replacement

Hi All,

While driving on the highway last night my right rear wheel hub failed in spectacular fashion. I heard a big bang, lots of noise, and sudden vibration from the rear. I thought I had blown a tire but when I pulled over the tire was fine. I nursed the MO home (grinding and squealing all the way) and while I haven't taken anything apart yet I'm 99.9% certain the rear hub bearing has failed.

The bearing is integral with the hub so the entire hub has to be replaced. The car is just out of warranty (curses!) so it will be yours truly doing the repair.

I've been looking without success for a DIY guide on how to replace a Murano rear wheel hub. Anyone out there can point me to the URL or post a DIY guide instead?

Even if I can't get a How-to guide can anyone at least pass me the torque specs?

TIA,
Daryl

Check the brakes first. I have never seen a hub on a murano fail like that.
It sounds like you may have had a low brake pad that came out. I have seen some that get so low that they pop out of the caliper and leave the caliper piston dragging against the rotor.

UPDATE
Well folks, this was a first for me...

I finally had the time to take the wheel off and discovered that it wasn't the hub, or the brakes at all...it was a ½" square, 8-inch long piece of solid plastic bar that had been kicked high up into my rear suspension/rear caliper assembly. The plastic is that tough black stuff. It was probably a lot longer when I ran over it, which accounts for the bang and terrible grinding noises I heard when it first happened. The plastic bar wedged itself against the inner rim of my wheel, so was rubbing as I was driving. Aside from ripping off all my wheel weights (which is probably why I had the sudden vibration) and scuffing the crap out of the inside wheel rim all is fine.

Alls well that ends well!

Thanks guys for the helpful replies. Goes to show that I shouldn't do a seat-of-the-pants diagnosis without first doing some exploratory dissassembly first...

Daryl
