Clearing codes for check engine and other lights
My car is a 1995 Nissan Maxima.
So I have a basic code scanner and once in a great while my check engine light comes on and I can clear that with the scanner. However, the ABS and brake light (emergency brake I think) are on almost all of the time and don't clear using the ODB II scanner. My questions are many but probably easy: 1. Should the ODB II scanner clear the ABS and Brake lights if there weren't an actual problem, or do those 2 lights not get cleared the same way the check engine light. 2. If I don't actually notice any issue with the brakes (its been 2 years or so of this) should I be all that concerned about the issue. 3. Any ideas if the ABS and Brake lights impact passing a vehicle inspection if the brakes and emergency brake themselves are tested to be operable (i.e. do states have an automatic fail on all warning lights or just the Check Engine light). Based on any help regarding those 3 questions, i can probably use other posts to plot my course of action. I'm sure I need to check some senses/fuses regarding the ever-running lights...though I'd figured after 2 years the bulbs behind the lights would have burned out LOL. Thanks all, Ryan |

Thanks NissanTech,
Think i have a read on what's causing the brake light (or at least msot likely causes) since I was up late last night surfing the web. So getting the emergency brake light off is ste 1. As for an ABS scanner, as I'm getting more and more into trying to DIY my issues, what could I expect to pay for a basic ABS scan tool. I bought the very basic ODB II scanner from actron not to far back and got it for like $40...nothing special about the model but it does the job. Thanks again, Ryan |
