Smile 1996 Maxima. Is there a drive cycle for an automatic?

I have a 96 maxima and when i took it to get the emissions test i received a rejected status. The DMV said that the monitors are not ready and i might need to do a drive cycle. I there a drive cycle for an automatic? and what would cause the monitors to be reading not ready?

any help would be greatly appreciated

thanks

To allow your vehicle's monitors to perform their tests and reset them to a "ready" state, your vehicle will have to be driven in a special way called a "drive cycle." Running through the drive cycle sets the readiness monitors so they can detect any emissions failures. Your vehicle's specific drive cycle can depend on the vehicle make and model, and which monitor needs to be reset. In most cases, two drive cycles are required, separated by a cool down period.

I believe the drive pattern is buried in your Service Manual Section EC - ENGINE CONTROL SYSTEM (I'm sure a Specialist will jump in shortly).

You can download Section EC - ENGINE CONTROL SYSTEM by jumping over to Knowledgebase - 1996 Maxima - Nissanhelp.com .

Thank you VPNavy for your help. I did the drive cycle as intrsucted in the manual. I then took it to the DMV and they said that the monitors are still not ready. How many times do I need to do the cycle before they are ready? Also they told me that the diagnostic test revealed that I have a knock sensor malfunction. Would this malfunction cause the monitors to not set?

Depends onb which monitor has not run. The EV (evap controls) is the most difficult, and usually requires a cold start, normal warmup, at lesat a quater tank os gas, driven at constant speed to several minutes several times, etc.

Other requires driving at least 55 mph for a few minutes, etc., but does depend upon the factory specs for the specific model. Every time you reset (clear) a malfunction code with a scanner, the monitors will have to rerun. You may have six or so sepaerate monitos on your car.
