Default EVAP Control System-P0455

Guys, I own a Nissan Maxima 2003 with an error code P0455. I did quite a bit of study on the internet about the EVAP control system. From what I understand, it is a system to store and dispose fuelvapours.

The question I have is:

What if I ignore the 'service engine soon' message. Will it have any impact on the performance of the vehicle? or increase fuel consumption? or any other adverse impacts?

I have an '02 SE that I just got finished fixing a P0455 code for.

I would start with the gas cap first. This can create the gross leak. Make sure it is on correct and tight. If you think it has failed this will be the cheapest part first. (About $20 for OEM)

Reset the light and finish a drive cycle. If it comes back on follow the work flow in the Engine Control section of the manual to check solenoid function.

Mine ended up being a faulty control valve. This should have thrown a P01448 also but didn't.

I drove mine for about three weeks with it active and saw a minor loss in mileage and no noticeable drop in performance.

Maybe one of the moderators can put the link up to the 'engine control' section. I'm not that advanced, sorry.........

Red face Me too... I have the P0455 & P01448

I was wondering what I should do if I have these codes too. I did check my gas cap and it seems fine, but how can you tell? Also, I have read it could be a control valve problem. Is that the control valve on the engine or on the charcoal canister near the rear bumper?

Thanks so much!!!

I also have a 2002 Maxima SE

The valve is on the canister. If you have both codes you either have a bad valve or a broken wire to it.

Default EVAP Control System-P0455

Thanks MPE235!!! I will go and check it. I also downloaded the Engine Control section for the Maxima. Is there another way to check if the valve is bad?

Without the nissan scan tool your best bet is to get a battery and two wires and touch the pins on the valve. If it clicks it is working.

Where can i get one of these control valves? I was told part number is 14930-9E01A. I already replaced the gas cap and that didn't fix it. I hear also that some people have replaced the fuel filter when they are getting this service engine soon light on not sure about that. The place i took my car charged me $100 and didn't tell me if it was or wasn't the control valve they just said try the gas cap :( i could have saved myself $100 coming on here sooner!

Not for the P0455 code, may be for other code.

Before replacing any parts, you should try to diagnose the problem.

Here is a bulletin that can help you: Knowledgebase - NTB09-020 EVAP LEAK DTC DIAGNOSIS - Nissanhelp.com

And the "Engine Control" section of the service manual: Knowledgebase - 2003 Maxima - Nissanhelp.com

I talked to the mechanic again. He said they just did a smoke test on it and found nothing from that. Code was for EVAP Control System Gross Leak/ Large Leak or something. And looking at the Engine Control System pdf it says on page 368 something about it being "EVAP Control System (Small Leak)" for the Vent control valve as it is used only for diagnosis. So that means that the vent control valve isn't my issue right?

I did get an after market gas cap for the replacement from the local auto store. Could it just be junk and i need to get the oem part?
