Default 2004 Maxima SES light on p0021

I have a 2004 maxima and I have an SES light on, this has been on for a while. I have had it to the shop and they said they cant find out what is causing it. I have changed the intake timing control solenoid but the light comes back on when cleared. Also the last shop said they changed the camshaft position sensor with the same result, any ideas to this problem. I have read through alot of threads with this issue and it seems I am on the right track but to my witts end. The car runs fine, oil changed every 3,000 miles so I am not sure what else to do.

If you already replaced the camshaft position sensor, the solenoid for the Bank 2, and the engine is clean, then you may have to replaced camshaft sprocket. Just make sure that the solenoid and the sensor you replaced was for the correct bank. Also check the sensor and solenoid connectors.

The P0021 code is very common, but usually changing the oil takes care of the problem, and in rare occasions you have to replaced the solenoid.

The manual calls for the trying easy stuff first, step one change oil, some times dirty oil carries enough metal particals to confuse the cam sensor. I would also remove the front sensor and clean any metal sludge off and check to make sure there is no oil in the area of the contact pins. Clear the codes and see if they come back. If it does then it gets a little more involved, you could have low oil pressure or a bad IVT solinoid, or a loss of oil flow to the cam due to worn IVT cover seals that ride in the cam sprocket those are easy to change. The VQ35DE engine has an inherent design flaw in the rear timing case where an oil gallery looses oil pressure due to a gasket failure which I'm sure is responsible for all kinds of cam position and chain tensioner related problems. I fixed mine by removing the gaskets and reinstalling plates with a high quality gasket sealant. My oil pressure went from 10-14 PSI at idle to 35 PSI
