Hi everybody! Newbie here. Anyone have a step by step method to cleaning the carbon deposits in the EGR Valve? I need to pass inspections. Thanks for all the help!

Removing the EGR valve is not complicated but it does require some patience, because of the location of valve.
Removal: 1: Disconnect negative battery terminal. 2: Air Filter Box assembly(. (Remove everything up to the throttle body). 3: Once you remove the intake assembly you will be able top locate the valve (See Figure 1, 2) 4: Remove the nuts that holds the valve in place. 5: Use carburetor or throttle body cleaner to clean the valve. I hope this help

thanks for ur reply NissanTech! Let me try this. By chance would u have any real pics of the process? If not, I want to provide pics if and when I do this. I am sure it would help many peeps like myself.
*** Where is the egr tube located? Many have said this may be the cause of the P0400 CEL. Last edited by depechek; 12-16-2006 at 11:13 AM. |

The MIL light on my 1996 Maxima recently went on. The mechanic at the service center stated it was the EGR valve, and that it had to be replaced along with another valve (can't remember name). Also that the part had to come from a dealer, it could not be an after market valve. He quoted me $486. I'm wondering if you had luck doing it yourself and if have real pics?

Before replacing any parts you should first try cleaning the valve. Unfortunately I couldn't get any pictures.

My original problem with my 1996 Maxima (engine light on) seemed to originate not only from EGR valve code, on the diagnostic check, but also Knock sensor and something else (can't remember)
Yesterday, I replaced the gas cap, and so far, the light has stayed off. |

EGR Valve
Thanks for the heads up. Just found out today that the valve itself is bad-had it replaced at a cost of 450.00 !!!. Hopefully this will be the end of it.

$450 is too much for a EGR Valve
$450 seems too much for a EGR Valve. You could find it on-line, it costs around $120 . Check Rock Auto -> RockAuto Parts Catalog

Anyone who had trouble code P0400 or blink code 0302 (3 long, 2 short). Has your problem been solved after you replaced a EGR Valve? Thanks.

P0400 troubles here too!
I have a 1999 Maxima with this same P0400 code. I took the advice and tried cleaning the old valve and the tube and the intake side. It all seemed cleaned. I reinstalled the valve, cleared the codes but could not get the EGR monitor to complete on my scan tool. After running it for a while the monitor completed and the CEL and code returned, bad EGR valve I concluded.
I removed the old valve and installed a new one (autozone). I again cleared all codes. This time the EGR monitor completed immediately and the CEL light stayed out for several days. The CEL is now back on and the P0400 code is back. Any advice on what to try next? Thanks in advance! |
