06 Maxima ABS Issue
Hi, I have a brand new problem with my Maxima (been having quite a few lately). As soon as I turn on the car I can hear the ABS (Anti-lock braking system) humming even before I hit the brakes. Then when I hit the brakes (below 20 or 25 MPH) the ABS kicks in even on dry surface. Always. The interesting part is that the ABS light does not come on.
I just replaced my tires and also had the brake pads and rotors inspected. My mechanic is clueless what the problem can be as the computer does not pick up any problems. He said that only a Nissan service shop would be able to detect it. Being that the ABS warranty expires after 36,000 miles (I’m at 40,000 now) I’m freaking out at the thought of another major expense on a 2006 leased vehicle. Any suggestions before Nissan takes my pants away? |

Until a Specialist replies...Jump over to Knowledgebase - 2006 Maxima - Nissanhelp.com and download Service Manual - Brake System 2006 Nissan Maxima. Take a look at TROUBLE DIAGNOSES FOR SYMPTOMS.
Hope this helps for now...

Did you use the same size of tires?
It sounds stupid, but check all the tires and make sure the size mathes on all tires. I was in a similar situation and the problem was one the tires. Hte customer had just installed new tires and one of the tires was the wrong size.

The problem started BEFORE I replaced the tires and the problem continues now after I replaced them, and they're all the same

If you are mechanically inclined you could repair this. The rear hubs need to be removed and cleaned. Also the plastic cap behind the hub needs to be modified. After removing the hub you will be able to remove the plastic cap behind it. You will see a hole in the cap where the sensor goes through it. Cut the top portion of the cap so the hole looks like a U and reinstall it. Clean the corrosion around the bearing mating surfaces and reinstall the rest of the parts. Do this for both rear wheels. Be sure to reconnect the front sensor after the repairs are made. You will need to have the codes cleared after repairing.

Interesting. I’m not disputing your claim but my understanding from my mechanic was that he cleaned it all thoroughly. As for unplugging the ABS, I had a hard time picking the right wire. Can you be more descript?
Also, the problem started soon after replacing a baatery, could there be a connection? Last edited by mightymordy; 10-06-2008 at 07:15 AM. |

I've been a technician for 13 years now I'm having the same problem as you mentioned I did like you described and it solved the problem for about hundred miles or so abs lights went off and was perfect about three days later it started it again but the abs pump is running as loud because I pulled them off and went through and cleaned them all again very well the car is from illinois but i'm in tennessee so nobody down here has had that problem. I also put dialectric grease around the inside of the hubs where the sensors run against but it is doing it again I found the plug you are talking about unpluging on the passenger side fender well but thats just to the front speed sensor is that the one you are talking about because my pump is still running sometimes louder and then sometimes quieter I was wondering if it was the rear sensor you was talking about unplugging cause I think it is buried down in the engine bay next to the motor I was just wondering thanks alot if anybody can reply to this its driving me nuts and has my lift tied up at the moment.Thank you Jared Kinser from Greeneville, TN |

I assume the passenger side, being near the curb, is the wheel that gets wetter than the driver side. On my 2007, here in Georgia, where road salt is almost never used, should I remove/inspect/lube the rear ABS sensors just to be safe? I'm at 34K miles and would not be excited about dropping $1300 on an ABS unit down the road. |
