Default camshaft timing marks.....

I have a 96 Sentra 1.6L DOHC...I am trying to find out if the upper cam chain has jumped a tooth or not. My quarry is that the exhaust cam gear has a square stamped on it...the intake cam gear has a pin punch ( . ) stamped on it...and the central transfer gear has a square stamped on it. This is my first Nissan and I am mechanically inclined, but this car has me baffled. How does the two squares and the (.) line up so that both cams and the crank are in syncronization? Any help would be great.
