Who said that the transmission was "Not talking to the computer"? It sounds like the transmission fluid is low, or dirty or that the transmission is mechanically failing.

Have you checked the transmission fluid level? when was the last time you change the transmission fluid?

"Not talking" sounds like there's an issue with the CAN (controlled area network), which links many of the control units together via two, twisted wires. One would need a lot more information to help you with this, including trouble codes of various systems. The first thing I would do is see if it might be covered under warranty, since powertrain is 5 year/60000 miles and long-term emission system, typically 7-year/70000 miles. Of course, start with your basics, including checking fuses and fusible links, making sure battery connections are clean and tight, charging system is within specs and checking the trans fluid level and condition.

Check for coolant in the transmission fluid or take the cap off of the coolant reservoir and look for pink sludge.

It shouldn't be an issue in his 2012. It was the 2005-2010 models that had the cooler failure issues resulting in the cross-contamination.

It was more common on those years but can still happen on the newer model. But you are correct that it shouldn't be an issue on the 2012 model.

Do you have knowledge of this happening with a Frontier 2011 and up?

Technically, any radiator with an internal oil cooler, be it trans oil or engine oil, has the potential to have a cross-contamination issue due to failure of the cooler, but, they are relatively rare. The 05-10 models had a problem with a seal failing in the original radiator's cooler which resulted in the cross contamination issues. I've yet to hear of any '11-and-later models have a cooler failure (knock on wood!). When I worked as a Nissan tech from 1985-2003, I never heard of or encountered any cooler failures on Nissans. Again, it "could" happen, but it's not common (other than the 05-10 years).
