Default ECM codes indicates EGR, but engine runs smooth....

I have a 2002 Nissan Frontier 2.4 and the "Service Engine Soon" light just came on. I had just changed the oil/filter and the belts, and the engine purs like a kitten, so I am suspicious of the light. I removed the air cleaner intake apparatus that runs across the top of the radiator when changing the belts, and I had removed the air cleaner housing when I was trying to get a grip on the oil filter, so I am thinking that I may have bumped something loose and caused a very slight leak. Hopefully this will sound obvious to someone here and save me the tedious process of diagnosing.

The code was read using the blinking SES light method and it was 0402. I reset the light and it blinked continuosly until I ran the engine for several minutes and turned it off again. Then when I started the engine again, the light remained off. I am anticipating it will return, but only time will tell.

Many times the egr tube will get clogged and cause a sharp rise in exhaust temps

I agree with tech22, the problem was probably a temporary clog in the EGR tube.

Streamcast... I didn't know that nissan had issued a TSB for this conditions and even with such good photos.I have made this suggestion many times in the past to clean the inter ports. The best guess give-a-way is a sharp increase in exhaust gas temps reading with a consult II(III had not come out yet when i retired).I hope many more of your readers find this as we sure see alot of this problem as the older 2.4"s pile on the miles.

Thanks guys! The SES light did not come back on, yet, but I'm expecting it to return until I've had time to perform Tsb procedure. Without your help, I'd be fishing for who know how long before I stumbled onto the right fix by accident.
