m226 rear axle seal failures
Anyone have insight why the rear axle seals like to leak? I replaced one in my 2008 Frontier, and now both in my 2012 Frontier (<70k miles). I know a couple Titan owners with same issue as well. (Timkin bearings fine shape upon removal.) Stock seal appears to be skf manufacture.
Thanks! |

The differential breather valves seize and don't allow the pressure that is built up in the differential housing to release. The pressure has to go somewhere so it finds the next easiest place.

Not in these cases. Had both trucks since new, removed mushroom breather, and installed a nipple and 24" breather tube. Put a plastic mushroom breather on top, and anchored it to the frame crossmember. Nipple and tubes remain unobstructed.

If the Emergency Brake was engaged or partially engaged, and driveing that way for an extended period of time, would probably cause the Axle Seals to start leaking.
Also if the Brake's were used enough to get them hot,, that also might cause the seal's to start leaking. Heat cause's the Seals to expand,, and then when the heat is removed,, the seal's shrink and they start to leak. Driveing with the Parking Brake engaged or partially engaged, is my strongest suspicion though.
