Post Rear Axle seal problem

My '07 Frontier has developed an leak in the L/R Axel seal. I got the seal and pulled the axle, (what fun that was) only to discover that the axle seal is mpossble to replace without a machine shop because there is a hydraulically pressed spacer after the bearing roller that keeps me from getting the seal off. I talked to my local Nissan shop and there answer was get a new axle or new roller and spacer and they can heat it u and cut the pieces off. I am hesitant to do either of these things because it seems to me that there has to be a better way to replace a $30 part than buy a $500 component. I even called my dealer back in the states and he recommends a machine shop but won't tell me how they do it in their shop.

Does anybody have any idea how to replace this that does not involve major muscle movement?

How unfortunate but on the C200 Rear end there is no other way to re-install a new seal without removal of the bearing assy. Most shops use a hydraulic press and special plates to press the bearing and retainer off and on. You can buy the bearing and seal components seperate but you still need a shop to do the press work. I would estimate you could have this done under $200 in parts.

The parts I can get by having my brother pick them up in the states and mail them to me. My problem is I cant find a shop around where I live willing to do it. The local German dealer said he won't even touch it.

That 's too bad. The job isn't too difficult, maybe you could buy a press and do the work yourself. If you haven't downloaded the shop manual section already that details the work, we can send it to you to evaluate if you have the skill required.

The spacer is easy to remove. Drill a hole in the side of it. Go at least 3/4 of the way through it (don't go so deep that you hit the axle). Use a flat chisel across the hole and give it a good hit with a hammer. The spacer will crack and then you can slide it off.
Although it's not the ideal way to do it you can use an air chisel to take the old bearing off. Put the flat chisel against the race and drive it off. You can reassemble it in a vise if you don't have access to a press. Slide the pieces on and use the jaws of the vise to support the bearing and use a hammer to drive it together.
