I need to change the crankshaft and bearings a couple bearing spun and now you can hear the knocking real bad. What I need to know is can I replace the crank without dropping the transmission.

You don't have to remove the transmission, but you do have to remove the engine. To replace the crank, you have to swap over the flexplate or flywheel, so seperating the trans and engine is mandatory. You'll also have to remove the front cover and timing chain. You'd have to raise the engine to remove the oil pan, so leaving the engine in and removing the trans wouldn't be practical. Just remove the engine.
