Transfer case lubricant
I am in the process of changing the lubricant in my transfer case now! The vehicle is a 2002 Frontier 4wd, automatic trans, 3.3 engine, 125k miles. What fluid do I need to replace with. Book calls for 2 3/8 qts fluid. My local parts supplier is not sure of the replacement fluid? Nissan dealer is 50 miles away. Would Mobile One synthetic be a good replacement. Please respond with best advice!!!!!

I do not think that you need to worry about the brass syncro's in the transfer case so Mobile One gear oil should be fine.

I just checked the recommended fluids and lubricants (pg MA-13) from this site. It calls for the fluid to be Nissan Matic "D" ATF or API GL-4 SAE 75W-85. There seems to be quite a bit of difference in the thickness or viscosity of these two. The fluid is drained now and appeared to be about the viscosity of regular trans fluid but was brownish in color. Someone please advise!!

Use the 75/85 can't go wrong. I don't know why a ATF would be reccomended for a transfer case.

Thanks! I've been turning wrenches since 1970 and I wondered about transmission fluid in a transfer case. The new model autos seem to have left me behind. The latest model auto that I have owned is a 1988 Jeep Cherokee. Thanks again for the assurance.

ATF is recommended for many vehicles in the transfer case. That's what my Titan takes.
