Default 2004 Sentra / S 1.8L lower front ball joints

Hi: I'm seeing some notices that replacing front lower ball joints on 2004 Sentra requires replacing entire control arm. Yet, I can find many places that sell just the ball joints. Can ball joints be removed / replaced using a ball joint press ? thx,

You "could" replace just the ball joints by pressing them out/in. Nissan doesn't sell just the ball joint nor do they recommend replacing them other than the entire control arm. The reason being that if the control arm gets stretched too much during the pressing process, you could have the ball joint separate from the control arm while driving and be held on only by the snap ring. I've seen this happen on an A32 Maxima and on a B12 Sentra. Dorman Products usually makes complete control arms for most Nissans at a reasonable price and they have a limited lifetime warranty. You can get them at Rockauto.com, among other places. Another advantage to replacing the control arms is that you also get new bushings and the job becomes an unbolt/bolt on process without having to do the pressing.
