Altima 05 p/s pump leaks
My Altima (low mileage but out of the basic warranty) has developed a slow p/s fluid leak, needing minimal top-ups (1/4 inch below cold max) every 3-5 months only. I would appreciate your advice regarding the following:
a/ is it ok to use stop p/s leak products to top-up such as Bardahl's generic brand for European and Asian cars, and b/is there any downside to eventually replacing the p/s pump with a rebuilt/reconditioned one. Thanks for your help. |

are you sure it's the pump that is leaking, and not a hose or gasket?

That's what the dealer said, I wouldn't know the difference.

I would stay away from the "stop leaks", and I don't see any problems with running a rebuilt unit as long as it comes with a warranty. To be honest with you, if it takes 3-5 months I don't think I would do anything to it right now. That is unless you have a nice drive way.

Most Nissan power steering pumps don't leak as a rule. The hi pressure or maybe the low pressure hose is more likely the cause. Get a can of brake clean and go at it. Then drive the vhhicle for a few days and then take a good look to see just what is leaking. Pumps are expensive rebuilt or not. It's far more cheaper to replace a hose. be sure to check the return hose to the p/s fluid tank. They like to leak there.

Altima 05 p/s pump leaks
Thanks very much Tech 22. I forgot to mention there is no sign of any leak on my driveway, so the missing fluid msut be burning up. I will forward your advice to the dealer as I can't hoist the car to check the source of the leak.
In the event they positively confirm the leak is from the p/s pump, not the hoses, would you also advise to stay away from "stop leaks" until the pump is replaced ? |
