Default 03 Altima getting code 0442

Had the "cold soak" problem a few days ago, today the check engine light came on. My OBD II scanner came up with code P0442, evaporative cannister (small leak). What would cause this? I reset it but if there's a leak I'm sure it will come back on again. ANY HELP HERE???

Check the sealing surface on the fuel filler neck under the gas cap. They tend to get rust on them and cause leaks. Also the evap canister leaks around the grommets that the screws for the vent control valve go in. To repair this you will need to replace the canister and valve which is above the rear subframe. You will need to lower the subframe or remove the gas tank to get the canister out. Not going to be fun to do without a lift.

Thumbs down Missan Owners Beware!

:offtopic:No rust under the gas cap, it's plastic to plastic anyway so no rust possibilities here. I doubt very seriously that it is the canister. I built my shop last year and included a 9,000 lb hoist to aid my car hobby so if it came to that it wouldn't be a problem.

This will be my last post here as I think this site is designed to make Nissan owners think they can't fix this stuff themselves and by that, offer either misinformation or information that would tend to push the vehicle into the dealer so they can take advantage of the owner with over priced and unnecessary repairs.

Nissan owners BEWARE of advice on this site!

I was very surprised to read your comments. No one is making any money off this site. Nissan doesn't support this effort - period. If anything, I would imagine Nissan isn't happy with this site since it has helped many many visitors address their problems thus saving them a visit back to Nissan. It is the kindness of the owner that it even exists. I've read numerous comments that say "thank you" for fixing their problem(s). Unfortunately, it is still very difficult to address problems via visitor descriptions - everyone who contributes is doing out of the kindness of their heart - there is no profit motive on this site. I sure hope you reconsider and help other owners. If you see a suggested solution that doesn't agree with your experience - pipe in with your approach - we have to help each other on NissanHelp.

The filler neck is not metal. If you can't tell the difference between metal and plastic you probably shouldn't be working on the car anyway. Owning a lift hardly makes you a technician. Any idiot can buy the tools to fix a car. You can doubt that the canister is the problem all you want. The fact is I work on these cars everyday and replace them quite often. If you don't aprreciate good advise from experienced Nissan Master technicians then go ahead, spend a bunch of wasted money trying to fix it yourself. Oh and by the way, when you finally realize that it is the canister causing the leak, Have fun getting the subframe apart and back together yourself. I won't be available to offer any useful tips.

Default Dumb A**s

The problem with the Altima was in the seal between the fuel pump and housing. As I posted originally, I had pulled it out then decided it wasn't the fuel pump. When I replaced it, the rubber gasket that fits over the "lip" of the tank bunched which in my estimation was allowing an air leak. I pulled the fuel pump again (EXTREMELY EASY JOB) and double checked it. It had been bunched as I thought so I straightened it out making sure it was firmly down on the lip of the tank before putting the pump back in place and tightening the plastic ring that secures it. That was the problem with the trouble code.

Now, all you professed experts didn't even think of that. Hmm, that surprises me! I guess some old fart with a lift and some tools is a better mechanic than you parts replacers that call yourselves mechanics.

Like I said, BEWARE!:tank:

No we're just smart enough to reinstall the parts the correct way. You say the job was simple but even you couldn't do it properly. Call us parts changers if you want but at least we install them properly. Also if you were a better mechanic you would have installed a new seal in the first place. That is what a smart mechanic would have done.

I cannot help but respond to katie03altima... I would like to state that in all my training as a nissan tech there were two things that were instilled in me.One ,always go the extra mile to make sure you made the proper call before you comdemed a part. And two.. NO COME BACKS. If i had every dollar in time spent working for free because it was warrenty work i might not have retired. We make no money doing this. But its time well spent when we get a letter back saying thanks. Your attack was to say the least unfounded. But thats why i spent 23 years defending your right to free speech. Have a wonderful day.
