Default 2010 Altima P0420 Catalytic Converter Repair Cost

Hello members,
I am new to this forum and need your valuable input.

The CES light on my 2010 Nissan Altima 2.5S with 104K miles came on with a P0420 code. The light has been on for 6-8 weeks during which is turned off once for 2 weeks or so. Now that it has been constant for the last 4 weeks I got it checked with a reputable indy shop. They mentioned that the Catalytic Converter will need replacement and maybe one or both O2 sensors once they take a through look inside
The price (parts + labor included) quoted was $1200 – for Catalytic Converter and $200 for each O2 sensor that may need replacement.
Below are the questions I have:
1. Is this a Fair Price for this repair?
2. Are there any other related or similar major expenses on this MY Altima that I should account for in the near future (over the next 30K miles)?
3. Also since the car has no issues at all (fuel efficiency is normal and no other issues that I can feel when I drive it) should I be driving it or should I get it repaired asap

At 104k miles you're at the upper range of the life cycle of A/F ratio sensors. I suggest
you replace both pre-cat and post cat. You can buy the sensors Online. NTK Upstream O2 Sensor Part # 25679 Federal, California #25685. Downstream Part # 24449 for both Federal and California. If the price for each sensor comes installed and you're getting NTK Or BOSCH I think its reasonable. Most important thing is you're dealing with reputable people. Shop around and compare. Also offer to bring in the parts and you pay their labor.

For Catalytic Converters the price quoted is reasonable if you are in California or the State you live adopted Calif. Emissions standards. If you're only Federal, you can buy your own and take it to Midas, Meineke or any muffler shop near you. Talk to them first and get a quote for labor charge. Most common cause of CAT failures are poor maintenance specially engine oil change.
One thing to consider is when you have a local shop/dealer install a new CAT, in case of warranty claim for defective parts, it's a whole lot easier. CAT makers like Walker Catalytics, Eastern Catalytics come to mind. There are others so ask your shop what makes they're installing and ask questions regarding Warranty.
If you're going to install a new CAT I suggest you replace your Spark Plugs.

Thanks and appreciate the detailed response bennyb53. I will take your suggestion on replacing the O2 sensors and spark plugs. Based on the parts input you provided I looked up prices online(Carparts.com) for Eastern parts for the CAT front(Part#40800) and rear(Part#40919) the total price is approx $450. Is there any other extra parts that I need to support this repair that I should account for?

Also, assuming no other part is needed, what kind of labor should I expect here since based on the quoted price and the parts cost seems like I am being charged approx $750 for labor by the indy shop just for CAT replacement. Is this work so labor intensive?

I plan on asking quotes from Midas and others as well.

P.S: I am located in Atlanta, GA so seems like I will fall under Federal.

Try Rockauto.com, as well. I usually stick to Walker or Bosal when it comes to replacement converters. Some aftermarkets have been prone to still causing the catalyst codes to trigger when installed.

So here is the updated scoop based on the work done over the last few days.

After the initial $1200+400 quote, researched online parts and went to get quotes from Midas and Meineke

At Midas, the guy gives me a quote of $349(Walker parts) + 196(labor) = $545 to replace the CAT. Since this seems way off from what the initial "reputable" guys quote of $1200, I went ahead and talked to Meineke to get another quote for analysis.

At Meineke, the guys checks out the car for 2 hours at $0 cost to figure out what the issue is rather than just replacing the CAT based on the code. After his 2 hr analysis he comes with 2 items that need replacement, Downstream O2 sensor and all 4 spark plugs and quotes me $289(parts) + $100 labor for the O2 sensor and $100 (parts)+$150 (labor) for spark plugs.

At this point, the Meineke guys seems the most genuine based on the time and effort they have spent with the car and I plan to bring in the parts myself (total cost online for Denso O2 sensor and 4 NTK spark plugs $158) and be charged for the $250 in labor.

Let me know your inputs

For Nissans use NTK/NGK or Bosch. Denso are mostly for Toyotas.

Is the labor cost of $250 (2.5hrs) high for this work?

Need a little input from experts......I am finally in the process of replacing the catalytic converter on my 2010 Altima 2.5S and seems like though I am registered in Georgia my vehicle is a CA emissions vehicle.

I am trying to buy the part online but have been really confused as to what part will be the correct fit hence need expert help.

If you guys can provide a few part numbers for the cat and any other accessories like gaskets that may be needed for the installation that would be very helpful?
Also, FYI I am looking to replace the vehicle in the near future (6-12 months) so want to get something decent enough that would not break again

If you live in the state that adopted CA Emission Standards I doubt you can purchase a CAT online. If you haven't already noticed, all CATS advertised online only applies to Federal Standards. So check your local auto parts stores like NAPA, OREILLY, Nissan Dealerships, etc. The CATS they carry are already approved by the state. Just provide them your VIN Number.

$150 to replace 4 spark plugs? And $100 to replace the rear oxygen sensors, because the labor to replace the front sensors would have been built into the labor to replace the catalytic converter. Ouch! I'm not charging my customer enough!
