Own a 2013 Altima Sedan SV . Same problem. As soon as you un-plug the steering pump the noise goes away. Bought mine in Cobourg Ontario Canada..

I have completed my CA complaint and moved on to my BBB Lemon Law claim. The arbitration hearing should be in the next couple of weeks.

I pulled the video into iMovie and was able to adjust the audio in the following ways:

1. Increased overall clip volume
2. Reduced background noise to 40 (I'm not sure what the value stands for)
3. Increased the EQ in the 1 & 2k band slightly

The noise is not audio aliasing/matrixing or compression artifacts.

This is the noise I hear everytime I get in my car. This video is while the car is moving going straight.

https://vimeo.com/48221055

You may need to turn the volume up on your computer.

Default 2013 Nissan Altima with a Constant Whining Sound

We recently bought a new 2013 Altima. My husband took delivery of the car, and spent time talking with the sales person with the radio on. He didn't notice the loud whiney sound when he picked it up, and mostly drove it on high speed on the highway, but I did immediately. When I took the car back for my orientation I asked the Customer Service representative giving the orientation about the noise. She heard it and immediately suggested we check with the Service Dept. My service representative couldn't look at the car till the next week, but upon driving the car remarked that the noise would drive him completely crazy. So we were all in agreement that the noise was very distracting and bothersome. I had to wait once again until the following week to have the car serviced. I took the car in last Wednesday. They initially thought it was the power steering unit, and replaced it, but the noise was still there. They kept the car and Friday they said they needed to keep my car longer, they wanted to have Nissan engineers come in and look at it, they were stumped how to correct the noise problem. I went back to the Service department today to ask when the engineers would be looking at my car. They had not had their call to Nissan returned since last Friday, and now it is Wednesday. The technician who had worked on my car then placed another call to Nissan headquarters and his call was put in their queue. I then spoke with the service manager and asked that he also contact Nissan to see if repairs to my new car be expedited. I have been driving their loaner car (not even comparable to the car that was purchased) for over a week and at the time of this writing have no plans from Nissan how or when they are going to try to make repairs to my car. It is making all of the noises others on this thread have been writing about. It seems there are only some of the 2013 Altima Sedans are having this same identical problem. It is not a normal operational noise! The loaner car I am driving now has a slight whine noise when turning off the car, something that does sound "normal", it's not a constant background noise either. Mine new car's noise sounds like described earlier, like an erratic morse code, loud enough that you can hear it even with the radio's volume turned up loudly (which I don't like to do). Thanks to everyone who has posted about this. I wanted to add my comments to let you know there is another Altima customer with the same problem! I'm taking Internot's suggestion and filing a case with Nissan. I will also be posting the video I took of the car's noise on Youtube. I'll post the link here when it's uploaded.

Service Manager contacted me and promised they'd find a way to get it fixed. I now have hope that they will, he's bringing in the experts. If it does get fixed I will post whatever they found to correct the noise problem.

Default Having the sane issue, but mine is a whistling noise.

Hey all,

Only 2 weeks in with the new 13 alt and I"m having that whistling noise. Took it to the dealership and the guy knew what it was right away! They gave me a loaner. Just called bout 10 min ago and said that the tranny computer had to be reset and a couple other things had to be adjusted, but the noise is still there...

My question is to any nissan reps following this, is there going to be a recall on this soon and is this covered under the power tranny warranty, or should I just return the car and get my cash back?

Thanks,
donna

Talking Car whine noise in new 2012 Altimas

Hi! I'm glad to be able to say that Nissan fixed the problem in my car!! They sent engineers from Nissan Corporate to fix the problem. They now know what is causing this, and it's an easy fix. I'm not technical but will explain the best I can. It has to do with a wire coming from the power steering unit and not feeding thru holding brackets correctly. It allows this wire to touch the engine firewall and that sets off the irritating variable noise! Have your dealer contact Nissan headquarters, either they can be instructed how to fix your car or they will send their corp. engineers. Now that my car is fixed I LOVE it!! Good luck, it is fixable!!

Default Car whine noise in new 2012 Altimas

I just got my car fixed! Nissan engineers came in to fix it and another car bought at a different dealership - they now know what the problem is, a wire running from the power steering unit is touching the engine firewall in some cars and causing that strange irritating noise. It's an easy fix for them, now that they know. It's not visible as the allowance is so small for this. It is fixable!! I LOVE my car now!! Good Luck!!

If you live in USA then maybe , looking into the lemon law would be a avenue to look at. They are ordering me a new power steering motor. It is taking a long time to fix this problem.....good luck....

After i took the car to the dealer, they agreed that it is annoying noise but there is nothing they can do (i took a printout of this thread, and they claimed that they tried checking everything mentioned in this thread) but to call it a normal situation, a charasterstics of the nissan 2013.

i have filed a case with nissan.

I bought my Altima 2013 just last week and I have the same whistling issue with this vehicle not to mention that when I brake, the car makes a knocking noise enough to be annoyed. I took the car to the dealership and was told that the whistling noise comes from some type of steering electronic pump or something to that effect and the back knocking noise came from the shock suspension?????? Last night, when I drove the car the knocking noise was so loud that it scared me. Brought it again to the same dealership and was told now that there may be a defect of some sort. Of course, they couldn't tell me the exact problem. The appointment will be next week and they need to keep the car for a couple of days. This has been a disaster almost to the point of not wanting the car. The whole reason why I purchased the vehicle is so that I wouldn't have to worry about any type of mechanical problems and now, I"m finding myself back and forth the dealership loosing time at work.. Any advise?

I doubt the dealership will fix it for you, they will just leave the car over there for a couple of days, perform some regular checks and tell you, 'look, it is the same with every new car out there, so it has to be normal'. All the dealership engineers i talked to claimed that it is their first time to hear about this issue.

call 1-800-nissan-1, have them schedule an appointment with a specialist from region or headquarter, have a printout of this thread and present it to them. Im waiting for my appointment next week. I don't know if this will make a difference, but i don't believe there is anything more my dealership can contribute.

I'm hoping that the dealership can at least fix the knocking noise but I will definitely call the number you provided. Has there been a lot of complaints about this car? It's unfortunate to experience this kind of issues with a brand new vehicle. I've been a loyal Nissan customer for years and this has made me think twice. It be a different story if they're actually able to fix the problem instead of give me an answer with no solution. I don't know anyone who can handle that whistling noise all the time. I've had it for a week and I have been extremely annoyed.

i have nothing else to complain if this noise can be taken out. im pretty happy with it otherwise. i just hope everybody brought here via google because they are having the same issue can have their voice heard so that it can become a big deal for nissan to take it seriously.

If you turn the car on and open the hood you will find the power steering pump and reservoir right behind the passenger head lamp in the engine compartment. You should be able to verify that it is the source of the noise you are hearing.
Well guess what a lot of customers don't want that loud whining noise... Everyone who is posting in about this whistling noise on Altima 2013's all have purchased the vehicle for more than $25,000. I have the 2.5 SL myself, and would have NOT bought this thing if i knew that noise was "NORMAL". Its not normal, i drove another one at the dealer today with the service manager in the passenger seat and that one did NOT have it, for the ones that do have it nissan has to stop saying "normal, normal normal" to everyone and do something about it because they are losing heck of a lot of customers. Why would everyone pay $25,000-$30,000 to listen to some annoying noise that pissed you off and gets you an headache. I left my car at the dealer and its been there for 2 weeks now, and im not going to pick it up until they fix the problem or exchange it with a new one. They keep saying take it and we'll call you back.. its been 2 months now, still no solution.. not happy at all.
