Default 1994 Altima Alternator Replacement

I am determined to have this done before my husband gets home at 11 p.m. CST. I have spent the day learning about the tensioner etc... Everythinig off, new alternator purchased and back on - bottom bolts about 2/3 way, serpentine belt setting in its little treds - and then stopped.

It is like the interior threads of the new alternator are not right... the bolt seems to be chewing its way through. I stopped after a couple of tight turns and came here.

Suggestions? Ideas? Tricks? I would appreciate it all!

I have a clamp light up and running - determination has set in!

OK - so I am a 55 year old housewife out doing this. And NOW I know that even though putting the tensioner back makes it easier it puts the top bolt out of kilter; And that a 1994 altima has a nut/outtie/male tensioner. Its been interesting reading - but I hope that waiting hours and hours on someone to reply is not in my future for my Altima should be running just fine in an hour...

Wow, you're an empowered woman. Just like my husband and wife friends. He's a carpenter but she does most of minor repairs around the house.

Replacing the alternator, loosen the lock bolt and turn the adjusting bolt right above the belt/pulley. When reusing mounting bolts, always try it on the new part bolt holes for fitment before installation. Apply a dab of oil or even WD-0 on the thread if you need to. Wiggle and waggle the Alt. so mounting bolt go in with barely no resistance. Hope this helps. Its 10:15 am and I heading to the beach.

Benny. Thank you. I had help but yesterday i was on my own. I did find out that the smooth tensioner on the pulley just needs to be tight not clamped down with the fury of a full blown mechanic and the governor on the top of the alternator will then carry the rest of the tension! The first time we turned it on we nearly smoked the Sbelt into oblivion! And changing an Sbelt is a pain, but not the end of the world even laying in a gravel drive (yes I know, but desperate times call for desperate measures)

My car was a gift from the woman who owns its family when she passed. I was her neighbor caregiver for 2 years until she passed from Alzheimer's Disease peacefully at home. I really want it to last forever. It may be wishful thinking, but after replacing all of the major electric side "BIG" parts: Battery, Starter, Solenoid, Alternator and giving her new spark plugs an oil change an flushing the radiator - well i still need to flush the transmission fluid - but I think she will be on the road for a good while longer!

I hope you enjoyed the beach! I am off to have fried green tomato BLTs with my mom and sister and listen to them screech about me having grease under my nails... WHATEVER!
