my 2005 Altima wont shift from drive to park
My 05' altima has been sticking gears, for approx. 2 months. Sometimes it wont shift up from drive to park or even reverse. I usually sit there or continue driving around and it eventually shifts. Two days ago it did this and I got it to shift from "D" to "P" and now it wont shift from Park.
I found that button on the gear panel and pushed that so I can at least get to work. My question is what is the "fix" for this problem and what is it going to cost me? Is this a general cost or is it VIN specific. Please help, Im afraid to drive the car now. |

Check if the stop light comes ON when you press the brake pedal, if it doesn't, then the problem is the stop light switch, which is the same switch used to release the shifter.

What Nissan Tech was referring to was your brake lights. Enlist the help of your wife or kid, or neighbor. Have them step on the brake pedal and you go to the rear and observe if brake lights are on when brake pedal is depressed.
If brake lights are not On whe brake pedal is depressed, the problem is your switch. |

Yes the brake lights work fine. What is the name of the switch that's broken and can this be repaired by my husband?. What is the cost of this switch. Thanks for all your help.

From your description the word "sometimes" sticks out for me. The switch works most of the time but sometimes its sticky and not engaging thus the shifting problem.
The switch is at the firewall behind the pedal assembly. Some owners reported spraying some solvent to remove dirt to solve the problem. Some have to actually replace the switch. |

Good info. "Aenergy." And "BlessedAllOver" I suggest you read the thread "keyless start problem." I think your issue is related to what the owners have experienced.
