Default 2005 Altima Help! Do I need a Timing Chain??

I am new to this forum so please bear with me!
I have a 2005 Nissan Altima with 112K mileage. It's a 3.5 SE. Love the car but having some major problems!

My mechanic said it needs a new timing chain. He told me this several months ago and said the rattling will get louder and louder and when it does to get it replaced. He said he would fix for approx $1700. I thought that sounded very high! I went to a Nissan dealership near my work and they quoted almost the same. I am going to one last mom and pop garage tomorrow to see if their quote would be any lower. Does this amount sound in line???

My other issue is a high pitched squealing noise EVERY TIME i start my car. I know its a belt and I'm wondering how many belts are on the 05 Altima? I've read in this forum and it sounds like it could be the serpentine belt. How much will that run approx with labor?

I really appreciate any advice as I'm a single woman and dont want to get taken for a ride so to speak.

Thanks very much for you time.

Melissa in Mass.

Welcome "missmelis1976". I believe there are 2 drive belts for VQ35 engine, V-6, which is what you have. If you replace both I'd say $100-$125 for a shop to do it. I'm putting a price tag of $20. for each belt max. Your hubby or brother can do it.

You can download the Engine Mechanical service manual for your vehicle from the Knowledgebase page and do some reading. Arm yourself with some knowledge and talk to these guys as if you don't know a thing.

For the price they quoted you, ask what the scope of work. Ask how many TC and are they going to replace all. And are they going to replace the Tensioner also. I don't know if TC is what cause the rattle. The thiing is you probably have to replace the primary and 2 secondary, and possibly the tensioner as you don't want to have to go back later. It's laborious, hence, the high cost.

If cost is identical and independent shop don't do a lot of Nissan repair, I would favor going with the dealer. Ask around for freelance mechanic also. I would say it's a 4-5 hour job. Good luck.

Parts are not that high unless you are replacing the cam gears. The intake ones are very expensive. But no need to replace unless there is an issue with them. Normally the noise is from the primary chain guide. The plastic on the guide falls down and the tensioner goes to full extension causing the noise. I have performed this repair and I would recommend replacing the plastic shoes on the secondary timing chain tensioners, secondary timing chains, primary chain, tensioner, , and guides. As for the labor It will probably take at least 6 hours. But follow the manual procedure to the letter. I do believe there is a TSB on the procedure for this repair. Warranty time is I do believe 4.5 hrs, but 100% sure. I hope this helps somewhat. Time to do it will depend on condition and corrosion.

Default 2005 Altima

I've got a 2005 V6 and mine is in the shop right now. 122K miles....Just started making a "whirring" noise when the car is running.

1250.00 timing chain/guide repair at the local dealership. He said he'll throw in some discounts for me...yippee.
