How do you release the tension on the belt tensioner to get the belt off.

Using a wrench turn the tensioner clockwise (See attached image). The illustration have a special tool, but you can use a wrench.

From service manual:

Quote:
While securely holding the hexagonal part in pulley center of drive belt auto-tensioner, move in the direction of arrow (loosening direction of tensioner) using Tool.

Also read my 2 threads on Page 8 - Altima Forum

Title: Need Help In Replacing The Drive Belt. In it Mod mpe235 gave a tip on how to release the tensioner without a need for tools.

Title: Changed The Drive Belt on my 02 Altima: Describes the actual replacement and part # of the belt.

Notes: The 06 of the part # denotes # of ribs of belt which is 6 and that's what you want. The 0885 is the outside lenght which is 88.5 inches. The actual is 88.46 inside lenght which is 2247 mm which is the same lenght as the OEM belt. Have fun.
