95 Altima Brake Lights "Stay On"
Have 95 Altima, brake lights stay on. Have to pull fuse to turn brake lights off. Found broken rubber grommet on floor, replace it, brake lights still stay on, suspect brake light switch. Before replacing switch, i pulled connector off switch to see if brake lights go out. No....Brake lights still on! OK, I think the lights should go out by opening the circuit, maybe I'm wrong. So then put jumper on end of connector to complete circuit. Brake lights "STILL ON"!!! I check Wiring dia. Power comes from fusebox to switch then to lights. Where are these lights getting power from??? Please Help!!! About to pull out all my hair.

I suspect you may have short circuit. Are the tail lights working?
Check the bulbs, sometimes the bulb contact points melt and make contact with the tail light.

I'll take a look at the tails lights and contact points. I did have the right brake light flickering and had to tighten the screw at the contact point and also changed out the bulb.

that rubber grommet you found, there should be 2 of them, one for cruise control and the other for that brake lights. (at least on the Maxima there are 2, I suspect this to be true on the Altima.
Make sure that if you replaced them, they are in fact working. You should be able to push in the switch and have someone tell you if the brake lights go off. If they do, then the grommet isn't doing it's job or the switch needs adjusting.

Bingo!!!
Thanks, that is what happened. I couldn't see the brake light switch, because it was behind the steering column and was also missing a grommet. Now my cruise control is working, bonus!!!

Those grommets must be heat sensitive. I have a 95 and and a 97 Max, the 97 lost both of them within a couple of weeks during this past summer. The 95 however, still has both of them.
Glad you found the problem! |
