Default New TPMS Sensors?

I just got a new set of tires from tirerack.com and they said that I had to get new sensors. I'm using the stock wheels and the sensor appears to be attached to the valve stem. I usually replace the stems when swapping tires but don't want to pay the $180 if I don't have to. Any ideas? Thanks.

If you are just replacing the tires, you can use the same sensors. You don't even have to reprogram the sensor again. Just mount the new tires and that is it.

Did Tirerack give you a reason why you have to use new sensors?

They just said that it was recommended that I change the sensors every time I replace the tires. I thought that was a little absurd.

Yes, it doesn't make sense to buy a $150+ sensor every time you replaced a $100 tire.

I was thinking about getting winter tires and puting them on steel rims. If I buy another set of sensors do they have to be programed by the dealer or will they work by simply installing them on the new wheels.

According to the manufacturers website, they have to be programed before using them. What they don't say is how many sensors can be set to one car...so maybe once all 8 are programed, all you will have to do is swap back and forth as long as you don't park too close to the "off" set and one of them is under-inflated.

Only 4 can be programmed to the car at one time.

What about the spare? I know I have 5 programed on my car because it took me over a month to figure out my spare was low. Once I serviced it and drove with the spare mounted on the car, the light went out. I guess there isn't a fuse to pull just for the TPMS is there?

The spare doesn't have a sensor. The body control module will only allow 4 sensors to be programmed. The wheel must be rotating for the sensor to turn on. The tpms system doesn't have a separate fuse.

Guess it was just luck then. Thanks for all the help! Hopefully the shop doesn't mess up the sensors when they mount the new tires!!

I am thinking about putting sensors on my steel wheels (winter tires) but am hesitant if they have to be programmed every winter. I've got sensors on the alloys and intend on using these for the summer. Can I program these sensor myself or I am stuck with going to a dealer to get it done.

My local auto shop has the tool. He said that if I put the tires on the car, he will program the car for $10. $20 a year isn't too bad of a deal for swapping tires.

Dealer wants $89 to program the sensors! I just bought a winter tire package at the dealer which included programming the sensors, but next spring I will have to have my summer wheels reprogramed. $89 every time I swap my tires is ridiculous. Hopefully by next spring other shops will be able to do this for much less than $89 Cdn.

I called 4 different shops around me and they all have the tool. I would tell the dealership to get bent and take it to a mechanic you trust.
