95 Altima Hesitating while cold and stalling randomly
Hi all,
My wife's 95 Altima is hesitating while its cold and stalling from time to time. We've actually already had an accident because of this (a genius rear-ended us after we stalled at a red light... needless to say, he wasn't paying attention). First, the hesitation. Its really noticeable when its cold, but will sometimes do it when its warm. It idles really rough and does not want to accelerate. The rough idling seems to be the worst when its cold, but the hesitation to accelerate happens regardless of temperature. Second, the stalling. Although its actually not done this to us I don't think since the accident, it is very nerve racking to be driving with it hesitating and not knowing if its going to stall or not. It will just randomly stall, sometimes while driving or other times while idling. It always starts with rough idling and then when you try to accelerate, it just dies and WILL NOT restart for usually at least 20 minutes. Then it acts like nothing ever happened. This is very frustrating, especially after getting rear ended. Our mechanic checked every thing out and he noticed the hesitation, but couldn't find anything. We replaced the O2 sensors and knock sensor. We took it back to him after it died again and he said the only thing that came up was a camshaft error. Which reminds me... our first automotive people we went to replaced the distributor and told us of another issue, but quite frankly I think they were full of crap as it didn't make any difference and we spent $1200 at that stupid place in two separate visits. Anybody have any ideas? In the research my wife and I have done, we have found a few people with similar issues, but I don't think quite the same. I suspect these could potentially be separate issues. I've also heard of the recall on the camshaft/crankshaft sensor, so we're going to go to a dealership and see if we can get that done to see if it helps. Any ideas are much appreciated! Brandon |

Sounds like a bad air flow meter, but I suggest having a tech with Nissan experience diagnose the problem first. I'm surprised that the tech suggested the O2 sensors and knock sensor, neither can cuase the engine to stall.

He replaced the other sensors because the computer was reporting them as bad. :) We were just hoping it would help the problem, but it did not. When he looked again, he couldn't find anything.
He wanted to see it while it wasn't running. The problem is that only lasts about 20 minutes, which isn't long enough to get it into the shop in time. This car also has a gas leak (I'm beginning to wonder how much more $ we need to put into this car before just moving on ), so I may have the dealer at least look at the issue and see what they think. We don't have a ton of money right now (or we'd just buy a different car), so we'll see. Thanks again! Brandon |

Check for oil in the distributer. If you find oil you will need a new distributer as no one sells just the seals
