Default 2003 Altima 2.5S Servie Engine Light On?

"Service Engine Soon" light was on while I was on road. Check user manual and it says it relates to loose fuel filler cap or low fuel, and the light should be off after a few trips if the cap is tightened and there is more than 3 gallon of gas. Otherwise let dealer take care of it.

I think low fuel shouldn't matter since it has its own warning light. I tight the cap and drive a couple trips, but service engine light is still ON!

Any idea? Should I drive the car to get it inspected by dealer?

Thanks for any feedback.

The light can come on for several different problems. You will need to know what code is stored so you know where to start.

Check for rust on the filler neck under the gas cap. Also the evap canisters crack where the vent valve mounts to it. The rear subframe has to be lowered to get the canister out.

Nissan OBD-II Trouble Code P0442
Nissan OBD-II Trouble Code P0456
yeah so it may be your cap but if u keep reading it could be other things aswell. inspect your cap and tighten it, and try to erase the codes and se if they come back. u can erase the codes by unplugging the battery for a few hours, if u dont have a scanner. if that doesnt do it than head to the service manuals and download the engine control section located here Knowledgebase - 2003 Altima - Nissanhelp.com

Thanks mpe and sergey.

One more stupid question: could I still drive the car with the light on for a reasonable distance? How far?

Default Problem solved

I replaced a new gas cap and cleared the code. The light never comes back untill Jul 2010. This time I got code 0456. I check the gas tank neck and there were lots rust. I searched in internet and found a lot of people have the same issue. So use WD40 with very fine sand paper(600) to clearn the rust on the gas tank neck. Also clean the gas cap. After clear the code, it is good now so far. I will keep posting here if the same problem comes back.

Thanks
