Do you mean that the outside (where the electrical connection is) was coated in oil? If so, it could have been leaking thru the sensor, or more likely around the o-ring seal around the sensor. Assuming that you replaced the o-ring around the new sensor, the oil leak should be gone also.
Glad it worked. I had a similar problem (though car would start eventually) due to a bad crank position sensor that did not throw a code, so I had no clue. Took my mechanic with a scope to find it.

The oil was on the inside part that goes in. Is that bad ?
